Response to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in the Venezuelan capital remains sharply split along political lines. Trump administration figures and GOP lawmakers have celebrated the execution of a long-standing US narco-trafficking indictment, while Democratic voices have criticized the operation as a violation of the nation's right to govern itself.
Official Reactions: Celebration and Justification
The nation's top prosecutor proclaimed that Maduro and his wife are subject to charges in a federal court, such as conspiracy related to narco-terrorism, drug smuggling, and firearms violations. "They will soon experience the complete force of US justice on US territory," the declaration continued. It concluded by thanking the president for demanding accountability and saluting the brave armed forces for a highly effective mission.
"Maduro is not the President of Venezuela... Maduro is the leader of a narco-terror cartel... and he is under indictment for flooding narcotics into the US," said the top US diplomat.
The US Vice-President supported this view, stating that the administration had presented multiple chances for de-escalation but was adamant that drug trafficking must end. "He is the newest person to learn that President Trump keeps his word," the statement concluded.
Opposition Backlash: Accusations of Lying and Militarism
In contrast, opposition reaction was swift and critical. Senators accused the administration of turning an counter-drug campaign into a regime-change venture.
One Democratic senator accused that cabinet members had looked the Senate directly, promising the mission was not about regime change. "We distrusted them then and we see now that they blatantly lied us," the senator stated.
The senator, a ex- State Department official, argued that the operation "is not a sign of power. It's not wise diplomacy. It puts Americans at risk... and it sends a horrible signal to other world rulers." The strike would further damage the America's reputation and isolate the country from its friends, the senator added.
Another prominent progressive voice charged the president of betraying its supporters by "starting a unnecessary conflict." The critic urged a movement against "bloated military spending and militarism," advocating for greater focus in domestic priorities like jobs, medical care, and education.
Expert Assessment: Scale and Possible Consequences
Analysts observed that the armed operation targeting sites in and around Caracas constitutes the biggest American armed operation in the region in decades.
"When it happened is not a coincidence – it appears aimed at undercutting the anniversary of Maduro's most recent term in office," commented one expert via email. The analyst cautioned that the situation depends on the reaction of the country's government and military.
While they have so far avoided direct confrontation with US forces, deployments suggest efforts to control unrest. "A peaceful handover is unlikely," the assessment continued, "with the danger of armed opposition from loyalist factions – including parts of the military – stays elevated."
