The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
