The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
