In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
