Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
